Welcome

Welcome to Bryony McCormick Counselling. I’m a Registered Counsellor based in Meadowridge, Cape Town. I provide psychological counselling services, face-to-face, at your home and online.

I welcome all individuals from adolescents to adults into my practice. All dialogue is English, and face-to-face sessions are in my shared practice room at 12 Kendal Road, Meadowridge. Counsellor-client confidentiality is respected according to HPCSA guidelines.

I don't have a specific focus but find common themes that show up in my practice are grief & loss, trauma, transition, disconnection, personality development and stress & anxiety, all of which can present within couples or individuals. I look forward to meeting you and I commit to listening with curiosity and openness and provide you with a safe, non-judgemental space.

What does a Registered Counsellor do?

According to the Scope of a Registered Counsellor, our role is to “extend psychological services and make them accessible to the diverse South African population. A Registered Counsellor conducts psychological and preventative interventions that focus on the promotion and enhancement of psychosocial wellbeing for individuals, families, groups and communities.” So in other words, I aim to be the first point of call for mental support and healthcare in South Africa.

In my day-to-day practice I do the following:

  • Provide preventative, developmental counselling services

  • Perform supportive psychological interventions to enhance emotional functioning and mental well-being

  • Provide screenings for the purpose of mental health as a preliminary screening tool in order to refer appropriately

  • Offer specific psychometric assessments

  • Contain any presenting difficulties, i.e. the alleviation of distress, anxiety, etc

  • Support to assist in the restoration of a previous/more adaptive level of functioning

  • Psycho-educate and promote mental health

  • Develop preventative and developmental interventions on all systems levels

  • Promote primary psychosocial wellbeing

  • Work with interdisciplinary professional teams

  • Refer to appropriate professionals or other appropriate resources according to the guidelines of good practice in the health professions.

How is a Registered Counsellor different to a psychologist?

The easiest way to understand this is that Registered Counsellors’ main function is to prevent, promote, intervene, and appropriately refer. Think of it like the GP of the medical world. We are the first person you contact and will assess and attempt to deal with whatever you may bring into a session. If we are not qualified to deal with your specific case however, just like a GP we will refer you to a specialist.

Our work is focussed on psychological screening, basic assessment and psychological interventions with individuals, groups and communities aimed at enhancing personal functioning.

We are not authorised to diagnose a psychological disorder, yet we are trained to recognise them and refer where necessary. We are not authorised to prescribe any form of medication whatsoever.
