My Story
I obtained an undergraduate degree in Applied Psychology from the University of Cape Town immediately after high school and after 16 years in the media industry as a magazine editor and digital marketing consultant, I decided to switch careers, rekindle my connection to psychology and enrol in a post-graduate psychology programme that would allow me to register and practice as a Counsellor. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology (Equivalent), completed the six-month practicum and passed my HPCSA Board Exam before registering as a Counsellor.
My personal experiences combined with the myriad of different cases that walk into my practice have allowed me to keep my focus quite general. That said, I have found the most common areas of focus are trauma, grief & loss, disconnection, stress (burnout) and anxiety, transition, personality and identity development and exploration, couples and pre & postnatal transition. I am deeply connected to and believe in what counselling can do for individuals and couples, and extend my services to anyone in need.
My style? Well when it comes to counselling, I have discovered that while tools can and do help a person manage their issues, being heard, being empathised with and being seen are as valid and important. So I combine both. I believe that education and knowledge empower, and always find time for psychoeducation in sessions. I've also come to learn that being available to those in need is key, which is why I offer home visits (great for new parents who can't conceive of leaving the house just yet), and welcome your newborns to sessions if you don't have child care yet. Counselling doesn't have to look a certain way, it has to feel a certain way - and I am committed to doing my best to give you that service however it may materialise for you.
I tend to draw my approaches from well-known and established fields of work such as Narrative Therapy, Positive Psychology, Solution Focussed Psychology and both Cognitive Behavioural Theory and Rational Emotive Behaviour Theory. That said I have been increasingly drawn to the newer field of work by emotion researchers like Dr Susan David, Dr Brene Brown and Dr Daniel Goleman on topics such as Emotional Quotient, Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Agility. As a Registered Counsellor, I am proud to be a primary form of mental health support and look forward to doing what I can to help you feel heard, feel supported and feel empowered.
